Thank you to Cascade Yarns for providing the yarn for this sample!
If you follow me on Facebook or subscribe to my e-newsletter, you probably already know my good news: we’re adding another little monkey to our family in December! Our baby boy will join us right around Christmastime, and we are beyond excited.
Believe it or not, I didn’t even know how to crochet when my other two boys (now 6 and 4) were born. Luckily, some of the wonderful women in our church made beautiful crocheted items for both of them when they were born. Now, it’s my turn!
Oh, and – side note – that’s my oldest monkey up there in the photo holding his future baby brother’s hat. How adorable is that!?
–
About the Yarn
For this hat pattern, I used Cascade Longwood, one of my all-time favorite #4 worsted weight yarns. (It also has a thinner version, Longwood Sport, which just so happens to be one of my all-time favorite #3 light yarns.) It is soooo soft, and works up soooo beautifully. I had a few balls of it from another pattern project, so I used what was left to work up baby hats in newborn – 1 year sizes. I’ve turned my business focus so much to adult patterns over the last couple of years that sitting down to make baby hats for a few days was refreshing (they work up so quick!) and Cascade Longwood makes it all that much more enjoyable.

About the Herringbone Stitch
This pattern uses a beautiful stitch called the Herringbone Half Double Crochet. I tend to get fixated on a certain stitch each season (last year was the SC+HDC combo), and this year, you’ll be seeing the Herringbone in a lot of my pattern releases. There are so many variations of this stitch that change its look drastically. In this pattern, we’ll be using the Herringbone HDC variation in a continuous, unturned spiral, resulting in a great texture that is a welcome change from the typical HDC hat.

Difficulty: Easy
Hook: I (5.50mm)
Yarn: Cascade Longwood (a #4 medium yarn). Yardage will be listed under individual pattern sizes.
Gauge: Upon completion of Round 5 (in all sizes), your flat circle should measure 3.75" across. For best results, adjust your hook size to match this gauge.
You'll also need: Yarn needle, stitch marker
Abbreviations Used: MC (magic circle - view tutorial here) ST (stitch) SL ST (slip stitch) SK (skip) CH (chain) SC (single crochet) HDC (half double crochet) HHDC (herringbone half double crochet; see "special stitch" below) SC2TOG (single crochet two together) BLO (back loop only)
Special Stitch: HHDC - Herringbone Half Double Crochet. Here's how you do it:
HHDC: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch. Yarn over, pull loop through stitch AND through first loop on hook (this is similar to a slip stitch motion). Two loops remain on hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops.
(If you need additional help, Moogly has an excellent video tutorial here.)
Notes: (1) This pattern is written in American Standard Terms. (2) Pattern is worked in a continuous, seamless round until the band. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of rounds and do not join unless instructed to do so. (3) Measurements and yarn totals are included on individual sizes and do not include the optional pom pom.

I too love this stitch, it gives a slighter dense feel to the finished item but has “give” – great for gloves and hairbands as well.
VickiAugust 6, 2016, 10:58 am
Adorable. I will be making this for my grandson due innovember. Thanks for sharing!
Debbie JessupAugust 6, 2016, 11:05 am
Love your patterns. Feedback on your website: the Time Warner Cable ad is so persistent and covers so much of what you’re trying to read, it’s annoying. There is no ‘x’ to close it, and it just moves downhill as you scroll. The other ads are just blended into the copy, and don’t bother you at all, but the moving TWC ad is horrible. Wouldn’t convince me to buy anything from them at all.
Jean FeidAugust 6, 2016, 11:11 am
Dear Rebecca,
Thank you so much for this baby hat pattern. It is adorable, and I can’t wait to crochet it. I have never done the herringbone stitch, and that too, I can’t wait to try. I believe with a few more rows and stitches, you could also use this pattern for an older child or adult.
CarolAugust 6, 2016, 11:13 am

Congratulations on your monkey-to-come! What a great Christmas gift! I’m going to make a few of these hats for a baby shower I’m attending. I know everyone will love them! Thanks for the pattern! 🙂
Ashlyn PetersonAugust 8, 2016, 5:14 pm
Hi! Congrats on your little monkey! What yarn would you suggest would be closest to feel, texture and weight to the yarn you used?
RebeccaAugust 9, 2016, 9:18 am
My guess would be Hobby Lobbys I Love This Yarn but definitely do a gauge check!
Ashlyn PetersonAugust 19, 2016, 6:05 am
Hi again,
so I’ve checked my gauge and it was fine, but for some reason, the newborn hat looks huge. I was making a hat for my friends baby but I feel like its really big for a newborn, granted my daughter was under six pounds.
Am I doing something wrong?
RebeccaAugust 20, 2016, 7:02 pm
How do your finished measurements compare to mine? I used standard measurements for baby head sizes, so if your finished measurements are very close to 5″ tall x 6″ wide (when laid flat), then it’s a true newborn hat. (I look at them and think they look big too, but they really aren’t.)
This happened to me too. I just finished the hat and it looks far too wide for a newborn. (Thank you for the pattern, though, and congrats on your baby.)
GillianAugust 9, 2016, 7:41 am
Thank you for the beautiful herringbone stitch hat, have made it in navy &fawn, made an elephant appliqué instead of the Pom Pom! Just love it!
LeeAugust 15, 2016, 4:59 pm
Love, love this hat, congratulations on your good news and all I need to do now is learn to crochet. ???
FranAugust 18, 2016, 10:23 pm
I love this hat for my five granddaughters. Would you have the pattern in like for 3-6. Thanks Fran
RebeccaAugust 20, 2016, 7:03 pm
Meaning 3-6 years old? Not at this time, but it’s on my to-do list 🙂
VivSeptember 10, 2016, 10:30 am
Hi Rebecca- Did you use oatmeal and walnut colors of Cascade Longwood? Thanks so much. -Viv
RebeccaSeptember 10, 2016, 10:33 am
Yes! 🙂
KimOctober 6, 2016, 11:35 pm
The sizing is way off but otherwise a great pattern.
RebeccaOctober 7, 2016, 7:40 am
Thank you? 🙂 I sized these according to standard measurements for these ages. You may want to check your gauge. 😉
LoriOctober 30, 2016, 9:13 pm
I don’t understand the band can you help me lol
RebeccaNovember 2, 2016, 10:40 am
What you’re doing is working your way around the hat, creating the band in a vertical back-and-forth pattern (just as you would do a normal ribbing), and each time you get back to the base of the hat you’re connecting the ribbing you just made to the base. So when it says:
Row 1: CH6. SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each remaining CH. SL ST in next 2 STS of the hat. (5, plus the 2 SL STS at the base of the hat)
The part that says “SL ST in the next 2 STS of the hat” is referring to the last round you did before you switched to the ribbing section. The best advice I can give is to take the instructions one small step at a time.
is there any pictures available because right now it looks like it has a bunch of octopus legs and I really want to finish it is so cute!
LoriNovember 2, 2016, 9:46 pm
I figured it out thanks! IMG_1885.JPG

Flori I can’t reply to yours because it only lets me comment so many responses deep, so hopefully you see this. I’ve just published a video tutorial that will help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5F_OMt6eFc

Hi! Cute pattern I am doing the 6-9 month pattern I am on row 13 and it looks huge? Any insight?
ShannonNovember 7, 2016, 3:10 pm
At this point it fits on my head….
RebeccaNovember 7, 2016, 3:50 pm
Did you do a gauge check?
hadeerNovember 8, 2016, 6:19 am
i want to make this hat for 2.5 year child.. what should i do ??
RebeccaNovember 8, 2016, 1:01 pm
You would need to look up the flat circle diameter for a hat for that age and adjust the pattern accordingly.
Sherrill WardNovember 26, 2016, 9:37 am
LOVE the look of this beanie!
AlisonDecember 15, 2016, 5:23 pm
Very cute but I’m thinking you have a very tight tension compared to some of us. I’m doing the 6-9m, I’m on row 13 and it’s loose on my 15mo as we speak. I have a pretty standard tension. I see a few others have had this problem as well. I’ve never checked my gauge on any project before, it is definitely necessary on this one. I may frog it and do the 3-6m for my 6mo nephew since I still do love it!
EmilyFebruary 4, 2017, 12:19 am
I did check my gauge and it was fairly close, I typically have standard tension. But I as well as others I see ended up with an incredibly large hat. I could see how large it was but thought maybe the band at the bottom brought the size back. I will try again reducing both my hook and size down. Very cute project if I can figure out the sizing issue. If anyone has insight please let me know!
RebeccaFebruary 4, 2017, 6:44 pm
There isn’t really such thing as “standard tension”; it’s completely relative (that’s why we have gauges). And in a hat like this that is so small to begin with, getting “fairly close” is not going to cut it.
Honestly I think part of the issue is the yarn. This is a thinner #4 yarn, and there isn’t really a solid substitute for it as far as thickness goes (if you look on yarnsub.com it doesn’t have many suggestions that are available in the big craft stores). So if you’re substituting something like I Love This Yarn or Vanna’s Choice, etc., that’s going to give you a larger hat.
MollyAugust 13, 2017, 11:25 pm
Is it just me, or are other 3 colors used? If so, when do you change colors? Every row? Super cute hats by the way!
RebeccaAugust 14, 2017, 8:40 am
Nope, just one color for the body and one color for the band, and that color change is indicated in the pattern (Row 19). 🙂
MollyAugust 14, 2017, 9:13 am
Thank you. My eyes must be playing tricks on me!
HannahOctober 14, 2017, 11:38 am
Hi! So I wasn’t able to get the yarn you use in the pattern, so I’ve adjusted the needle I use to fit the gauge. When I go to make the band, do I just need to use the needle the size down? Or what would you recommend?
Hi…love this herringbone hat but would like to make it for a 2 and 3 yr old. If I purchase the pattern is there a way to adjust for larger toddler/ childrens size? If not, is there a similar pattern you have? Thanks!
RebeccaNovember 2, 2017, 10:51 pm
Hello! It starts with a flat circle so if you know how to do increases to achieve certain head sizes, you’ll be able to figure it out 🙂
AlyssaNovember 15, 2017, 2:35 pm
Hi!
Do you know what the inside circumference of the hat would be of a 0-3 month’s hat? I’m guessing 12.5-13”? Thank you.
Hi, thanks for this adorable hat pattern! I’ve been a knitter most of my life but started crocheting a couple of months ago and am loving it. I make some baby hats for gifts, but would love to try this pattern to make adult-sized hats for Christmas gifts for friends. Would you happen to have this pattern in a couple of Adult sizes, maybe S, M, and L? I’m guessing they might be S – 8.5″ wide, M – 9.5″ wide, and L – 10.5″??? But I’m not sure.
RebeccaNovember 20, 2017, 7:44 pm
Hi! The adult match to this pattern is the Carlyle Slouch (measures 9.5″ wide). It’s slouchy style, but if you want a beanie, you can just do fewer rounds. 🙂 http://littlemonkeyscrochet.com/carlyle-slouch-hat/
Mary JoNovember 20, 2017, 8:26 pm
Thank you so much! You’re awesome. 🙂
FrankieNovember 26, 2017, 6:33 pm
Was wondering if you could adjust pattern to fit adult size head! Both male and female.
RebeccaNovember 26, 2017, 8:39 pm
Hi! The adult match to this pattern is the Carlyle Slouch (measures 9.5″ wide). It’s slouchy style, but if you want a beanie, you can just do fewer rounds. ? http://littlemonkeyscrochet.com/carlyle-slouch-hat/
Chelsea FloydDecember 1, 2017, 10:55 pm
I love this hat!! But I am also a beginner. I started making it and I’m unsure how many stitches are supposed to make up the magic circle? If I am making sense?
RebeccaDecember 2, 2017, 2:45 pm
Hi! The magic circle isn’t made up of stitches. If you look up in the “Abbreviations” section, you’ll find a link to a video tutorial on how to make one. 🙂
MichelleDecember 4, 2017, 12:27 pm
Thank you for this pattern! The 6-9 month pattern fits my 8 month old perfectly! (I crochet tight and used I Love This Yarn). My husband wants one now that he’s seen how good the first one turned out and I’ve been able to merge together elements of the baby and adult versions to get him exactly what he wants. Thank you!!
AlyssaDecember 7, 2017, 11:53 pm
Hi there! I love this pattern! I used it for a couple of baby hats and turned out beautiful. I’m currently trying to make an aldult version (just increase a little bit more). I follow the sizing charts and everything. I’ve tried 3 times and it keeps turning out super big! Any idea what I’m doing wrong??

Hmm, not sure! If it helps, I do have an adult version, but it’s slouchy-style: http://littlemonkeyscrochet.com/carlyle-slouch-hat/ Also, this hat has a faux-cinched top (whereas the baby hat is a flat top).
Hey Rebecca! Quick question….a nurse from the hospital near me has requested that I make and donate some baby hats for the newborns (not preemies) in the hospital. I’ve never donated before because I felt crochet hats don’t stay on as well since it is less stretchy than knit and they lay in those bassinets so they POP off. (at least that was my experience when I tried to make hats for my own at that stage) But with the rib stitches (which is new to me) I thought maybe it would work. Have you ever used your newborn hat on a newborn laying in a crib? I plan to make a few different hats and let them “test” them to find the one that works best for the babies, but if you have a thumbs up or thumbs down for this particular hat, I’d love to know. I would really like to focus on hats that I think will work for the need. Thank you so much!

Hello! No, I haven’t. I think a hat with a ribbed band (like this one) will be your best bet as far as crocheted hats go, but you’ll probably want to make one to be sure it fits your need.
I’ve made several of your hat and cowl patterns and they are always adorable with great directions. However, I wanted a hat for my grandson, whose head circum. is 18 1/2 in. So I went up a needle size (J and I) for the 9-12 mo. size. Yarn was Caron Simply Soft, #4 weight. Gauge was correct. Just finished and It’s so big – width of hat is 12″ !! Several others commented about sizing as well. Have you updated sizing or rewritten the pattern since this original posting? I’m going to try it again using the I and H hooks, but maybe I should go down a size to 6 -9 mos. I love the hat, and directions were great, but it this size would fit a large adult. Please redo the sizing everyone can enjoy this great pattern! I love your site and your videos – very easy to follow with lots of great patterns! Thank you for sharing your crochet talents and hoping to see this sizing corrected soon!

Hi Eileen,
I created this pattern a year and a half ago. Since that time I have crocheted a hat in each size as my newest baby has grown (he’s a year now), and every single time, it has come out the correct measurements. I am aware that several people are having trouble with it being too large, but I am confident in the pattern.
If your width is 12″ (I’m assuming you mean laid flat, so a total circumference is 24″), then it doesn’t make sense to me that you’ve completed my other patterns without issue. The 9-12m size is 64 stitches around, and my adult hat patterns that use the same yarn weight and hook size are usually about 72-80 stitches around, but they only size at 9-10″ wide laid flat. So if you made them successfully, then the inconsistency isn’t in the patterns.

Thank you for responding so quickly. I am going to try it again, I’ll go down a size to 6-9 mos. (my grandson is only 7 mos. but his head is pretty big!) and use the I and H hooks. Will let you know how this goes… Again, thanks for getting back to me

I have now made 4 of these adorable hats. Directions are very good and the tutorial for the band is excellent. I had success with the 6-9 mos size for my 7 mo. Old grandson who is typically at least a size ahead of his age. The 9-12 mo. Size fit my 5 year old grandson and then I added rows and adjusted the starting chain for one for my daughter. Toughest part of making hats is the sizing, I think! Love many of your baby patterns and cowls as well.

This is one of my favorite patterns ever crocheted I would like to know if it can be adapted for an adult size pretty please?
RebeccaJanuary 20, 2018, 8:33 pm
Hi! The adult match to this pattern is the Carlyle Slouch (measures 9.5″ wide). It’s slouchy style, but if you want a beanie, you can just do fewer rounds. ? http://littlemonkeyscrochet.com/carlyle-slouch-hat/

I love this pattern! Just finished my first one and it turned out great. I can’t believe how easy it was to do the brim vertically… No holes and seamless finish. Thanks for sharing!!

Big headSeptember 27, 2018, 3:50 pm
I made this hat in the 6/9 month size and it actually fits me. And I have a big head. Lol waaaaaay too big for my baby (who is in the 99th %ile for head circumference) so I’ll have to try to remake it, the newborn size will even be too big so I’m going to wing it. Like the stitch though. My baby and I will have matching hats. Lol

What a beautiful hat! I learned a new stitch and a new way to do ribbing, all in one simple project. I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton, and the sizing is about right. My finished 3-6 month hat is 7.5 inches across when laid flat, and it fits my huge almost 4-month-old well. Thanks! Will be making this one again.
About Me
Hey there!
I'm Rebecca, a wife, mom, and tryer-of-new-crafty-things. I love to crochet, and I try to design patterns that the younger generations will love to make and love to wear. You can get to know me a little more here!
What a cute pattern! So simple and quick. Thanks so much for posting this. And, congrats on your newest monkey! What a blessing! ?
Thank you so much! 🙂
I too love this stitch, it gives a slighter dense feel to the finished item but has “give” – great for gloves and hairbands as well.
Adorable. I will be making this for my grandson due innovember. Thanks for sharing!
Very cute hat. Thank you for the pattern!!
Love your blog and your patterns! God bless!
Mick
Congratulations!
Congratulations on your monkey-to-come! What a great Christmas gift! I’m going to make a few of these hats for a baby shower I’m attending. I know everyone will love them! Thanks for the pattern! 🙂
Hi! Congrats on your little monkey! What yarn would you suggest would be closest to feel, texture and weight to the yarn you used?
My guess would be Hobby Lobbys I Love This Yarn but definitely do a gauge check!
Hi again,
so I’ve checked my gauge and it was fine, but for some reason, the newborn hat looks huge. I was making a hat for my friends baby but I feel like its really big for a newborn, granted my daughter was under six pounds.
Am I doing something wrong?
How do your finished measurements compare to mine? I used standard measurements for baby head sizes, so if your finished measurements are very close to 5″ tall x 6″ wide (when laid flat), then it’s a true newborn hat. (I look at them and think they look big too, but they really aren’t.)
This happened to me too
This happened to me too. I just finished the hat and it looks far too wide for a newborn. (Thank you for the pattern, though, and congrats on your baby.)
Thank you for the beautiful herringbone stitch hat, have made it in navy &fawn, made an elephant appliqué instead of the Pom Pom! Just love it!
Love, love this hat, congratulations on your good news and all I need to do now is learn to crochet. ???
I love this hat for my five granddaughters. Would you have the pattern in like for 3-6. Thanks Fran
Meaning 3-6 years old? Not at this time, but it’s on my to-do list 🙂
Hi Rebecca- Did you use oatmeal and walnut colors of Cascade Longwood? Thanks so much. -Viv
Yes! 🙂
The sizing is way off but otherwise a great pattern.
Thank you? 🙂 I sized these according to standard measurements for these ages. You may want to check your gauge. 😉
I don’t understand the band can you help me lol
I figured it out thanks! IMG_1885.JPG
Hi,I am trying to finish my hat also, and I am not sure how to make band, could you help me please?
Flori I can’t reply to yours because it only lets me comment so many responses deep, so hopefully you see this. I’ve just published a video tutorial that will help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5F_OMt6eFc
Thank you so much for your help and pattern. I just finish the hat,and it turn out beautiful .
Hi! Cute pattern I am doing the 6-9 month pattern I am on row 13 and it looks huge? Any insight?
At this point it fits on my head….
Did you do a gauge check?
i want to make this hat for 2.5 year child.. what should i do ??
You would need to look up the flat circle diameter for a hat for that age and adjust the pattern accordingly.
LOVE the look of this beanie!
Is it just me, or are other 3 colors used? If so, when do you change colors? Every row? Super cute hats by the way!
Nope, just one color for the body and one color for the band, and that color change is indicated in the pattern (Row 19). 🙂
Thank you. My eyes must be playing tricks on me!
Hi! So I wasn’t able to get the yarn you use in the pattern, so I’ve adjusted the needle I use to fit the gauge. When I go to make the band, do I just need to use the needle the size down? Or what would you recommend?
Yes that’s what I’d do 🙂
Hi…love this herringbone hat but would like to make it for a 2 and 3 yr old. If I purchase the pattern is there a way to adjust for larger toddler/ childrens size? If not, is there a similar pattern you have? Thanks!
Hello! It starts with a flat circle so if you know how to do increases to achieve certain head sizes, you’ll be able to figure it out 🙂
Hi!
Do you know what the inside circumference of the hat would be of a 0-3 month’s hat? I’m guessing 12.5-13”? Thank you.
Yes it would probably be about 12.75″
Hi, thanks for this adorable hat pattern!
Hi! The adult match to this pattern is the Carlyle Slouch (measures 9.5″ wide). It’s slouchy style, but if you want a beanie, you can just do fewer rounds. 🙂 http://littlemonkeyscrochet.com/carlyle-slouch-hat/
Thank you so much! You’re awesome. 🙂
Was wondering if you could adjust pattern to fit adult size head! Both male and female.

I love this hat!! But I am also a beginner. I started making it and I’m unsure how many stitches are supposed to make up the magic circle? If I am making sense?
Hi! The magic circle isn’t made up of stitches. If you look up in the “Abbreviations” section, you’ll find a link to a video tutorial on how to make one. 🙂
Thank you!!
